Guy Fawkes 10 Mile 2008

Some bloke cheating on a bike

2 November 2008

Hosted by Nidd Valley Road Runners, the Guy Fawkes 10 is fast becoming a “must do” event in the racing calendar – and it’s easy to see why. A large quality field, a well marshalled challenging course, and a quality finish and race bag at Ripley castle.

Pitting themselves against the hills and the opposition at half past ten on Sunday morning were 14 runners from the Pocklington faithful. The race’s namesake lead the race off on two wheels (see pic), before peeling off after a loop of Ripley and letting events unfold.

A certain Mr Darran Bilton of Leeds led the race home in 52:59, with Tracey Morris of Valley Striders winning the women’s event. First home for Pocklington was Dennis Speck, recording a debut time on the course of 1:02:26 and 14th. Nice one!

Next was Paul Tatterton, also a debutant on the course – continuing his run of form with 1:04:27 and 26th.

Next was the author, hot on Paul’s heels with a time of 1:05:12 and 32nd. These 3 places were enough to guarantee 2nd place men’s team. Well done chaps.

The next 5 runners all came in well under the 75 minute mark – Clive Reid – 1:10:45, Jim Holding – 1:11:24, Steven Worth 1:11:42, Richard Ginn 1:11:50 and Patrick Piggott 1:11:57.

Next up the finishing straight was Clive Jeffery with a look of steely determination and a time of 1:16:15, followed by Paul Holmes who stormed up to the finish in 1:18:39. Paul Sheridan turned the tables on his Nemesis, Jill Dowson in recording a time of 1:22:44. Gill stopped the clock at 1:23:39, looking comfortable all the way to the line.

Just twq Pocklington athletes remained on the course…just outside the 90-minute mark was Brian Dobson in 1:30:17, looking strong and chuffed with his effort.

Sue Vicary brought the side home in a time of 1:34:59, wearing her customary smile and bounding up to the line with ease.

Our thanks go to Nidd Valley Road Runners for organising a quality race; we look forward to next year’s event with much anticipation.
