Snake Lane 10m 2008
Race report by Howard Cross

Starters in Garths End

On a fantastic Sunday morning for racing, the Snake Lane 10 mile road race was run by no less than 35 five of our finest Pocklington Runners.  The good weather conditions made it a really good opportunity to break PBs and really give the race a good go – and this was the case with many of our runners.

It was Tom Danby hitting the first P B of the day with 10th overall in a time of 55.15 - a good solid run from Tom.  Hot on his heels was Dennis Speck showing that he is an up and coming star for Pock runners with a time of 58.14 - 19th overall.

Just seconds behind came Ed Rawlings in 59.42 - 27th overall….will Ed catch Dennis in races to come?  Well done to the first three to come home for Pocklington - a remarkable effort and one that was well worthy of the second place  team prize for this year’s race.  Bring on the 10k summer league!!

The fourth Pock Runner to woo the locals with a constant six minutes a mile, in 37th place overall and first place in the over 55 category was Simon Richardson in 60.11.

Richard Ginn cruised around the course and knocked a good three minutes off his PB with a time of 62.06 - fantastic effort.  He was just ahead of Warwick Anderson who absolutely flew around in 63.29, which earned Warwick a PB to be proud of.  Kev Norman, the man with the glasses, ran a solid race with a time of 64 minutes which gave him 8th place in his m45 category - well done Kevin.

Next the first lady to cross the line for Pock was Helen Cross (My Misses) who I have to say did very well indeed - 64.10 was a very good time and earned Helen 4th lady overall, (61.04 last year)!  Must try harder next time my dear! X.

Patrick Piggott was next home in 69.06 - a good run and proving that he has got the distance in his legs now after the Brass Monkey.  Clive Read was next home in 69.16, having a good second half to the race and whistling past myself on the finishing mile.  I was hoping to win the race out right but had to settle for 183rd and a disappointing time of 69.23!!

Jim Holding was out to prove he isn’t just a tennis player - he is still a runner and ran round in 70.1.  Well done Jim and good to see you back.  Steven Worth was not far behind Jim in a time of 70.28.  Steven is going to be a force to be reckoned with this year, well done.

Steve Baker did very well considering he spent the week drinking and eating a lot and came away with a time to be proud of 71.15.  Mr Paul Holmes was next to grace the local support with his presence crossing the line in 71.55, well done Paul.

Steven Spruyt had a flyer, bobbing round in 74.29 - a good solid performance.   Clive Jeffery sprinted home in a time of 76.37 and Dave Wragg who had not done as much training as he would have liked but still made it look easy crossed the line in 76.47.

Steph reaches the finishing line

The second Pocklington lady to cross the pretty pink finishing line was Jill Dowson, showing her allegiance to the club with her Pocklington Runner blue pig tails.  Jill made the course look easy and really did show that training does pay off, slicing two minutes off her personnel best time - 77.34 is a excellent effort, well done Jill.

Hot on Jill’s heels was Marcus Bourne who had a really good run yet again in 77.41. Brian Dobson - Mr Reliable - came in with a great time of 78.18, pipping Darren Reevell by five seconds - 78.18 - well done.

Susan Brown cruised home in 80.24 just ahead of Paul Sheridan who crossed the line in 81.31. Louise Warren’s second race out for Pocklington mustered up a grand effort crossing the line in 81.53, which was just ahead of Sue Vicary, running locally this week, crossed the line in 82.02 - very well done Sue.

The man of the moment found time out of playing a major part in organising the event and leaving Cath at the wheel, Mr Dave Bee cruised home in 84.29, well done marra, grand job.

Faye Jessop who always puts in a good effort, put her hard training to the test and crossed the line in 86.44.  Dave Barker the master of this race added yet another mug to his ever growing collection and came home in a time of 92.44.  Steph Room completed the course in a very worthy time of 93.45 - well done Steph.

Rod Robinson came through the finish next in 94.04 and Julie Dunn came away with a very respectable time of 103.42 - keep up the good training Julie. Helen Reevell ran a time to be proud of in 108.12, and hot on her heels was our old comrade and legend Keith Godfrey in 1 hour 13mins 15 seconds, second in the over 75 category, well done to Keith.

Last but not least for Pock Runners was Gail wragg who completed the course with a great effort hobbling over the line in 1.57.24, well done Gail, keep up the good work.

Just like to say a giant thanks to everyone who made Snake Lane 2008 a great success. I thoroughly enjoyed the day seeing some excellent times from our club members. Second team place, 1st over 55 place and 4th lady,   we should all give each other a pat on the back at the next meeting, and carry on encouraging each other to produce one of, if not the best 10 mile road race in the country.
