Sowerby Cross Country 2008
Race report by Howard Cross

9 February 2008
On a wonderful sunny but blustery Sunday morning, it was the turn of Bridlington Road Runners to bring to a close the East Yorkshire Cross Country Championship for 2007/2008. I had to get the binoculars out to spot a Pocklington Runner in this race! A great effort to fly the flag and keep our name in the competition was made by three of our runners, who wore their vests with pride!
First back after a great start was Ed Rawlings who, like many others running, found the run in, against the wind tough but crossed the line in 6th position in a time of 33.40. This earned Ed second individual place award for this year s competition! Fantastic effort Ed and congratulations.
Next was Kevin Norman who flew past myself with the camera in 36.41 in 25th place, well run Kev - 14th individual position!! The only other Pock Runner to earn the right to wear his club vest with pride was Patrick Piggott. Simon’s gruelling Friday night speed session really tested Patrick’s legs, but also helped him round the course in 39.30 and in 36th position on the day. Very well done Patrick.
At the end of yet another series in The East Yorkshire Cross Country Championship, we have witnessed a really good effort and fantastic runs in this annual competition. The series is a really good opportunity to build strength and endurance into your training, especially if you are racing in the 10k summer league and racing throughout the summer. The races are quite challenging but are really good fun and we do need to keep encouraging each other to participate.
All new Pocklington Runners to this annual event will be welcomed and really encouraged to have fun - enjoy it and feel part of a team. So don’t be scared come along and enjoy the orienteering race at Bishop Wilton; the annual mud bath and mince pies at Langdale end; the thrills, scenery and good fortune at Thixendale; the friendly village people at Welton, and the fresh sea air and cliff top challenge at Sowerby .
It is fun so let’s have a good entry for 2008/9!!
